Speaker Biographies
Ellen J. Kennedy, Ph.D., directs the Genocide Intervention Network’s work
in Minnesota, focusing on education about genocide with special attention on
Darfur; legislative advocacy for conflict resolution; and fund-raising to
enhance both security and humanitarian aid in crisis situations.
Kennedy, a sociologist, is the Outreach Coordinator at the Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, University of Minnesota. She promotes holocaust and genocide education with Minnesota educators through conferences and special programs. She previously was a professor for nearly thirty years.
Kennedy received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan and holds doctorate degrees in both sociology and business from the University of Minnesota. Her area of academic specialization is immigration.
Jackson Katz is internationally recognized for his groundbreaking work in
gender violence prevention education with men and boys, particularly in the
sports culture and the military. An educator, author and filmmaker, Katz is
co-founder of the Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) program at
Northeastern University's Center for the Study of Sport in Society. MVP is
the most widely utilized sexual and domestic violence prevention program in
professional and college athletics. Katz’ award-winning educational video
Tough Guise, his featured appearances in the films
Wrestling With Manhood
and Spin The Bottle, and his nationwide lectures have brought his insights
into masculinity and gender violence to millions. He is also the author of a
new book, entitled “The Macho Paradox: Why Some Men Hurt Women and How All
Men Can Help,” published by Sourcebooks in 2006. Since 1990, he has lectured
at over 950 sites in 44 states. Katz holds academic degrees from the
University of Massachusetts-Amherst and Harvard University, and is currently
a doctoral student in cultural studies and education at UCLA.
