Dating Violence

Dating violence is physical, sexual, emotional, or verbal mistreatment for the purpose of gaining control and power over another person. According to the ND Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 11% of student’s grades 9-12 reported violence in a dating relationship.

Early Warning Signs of an Abusive Partner

  • Extreme jealousy.
  • Has poor self-image and is insecure: macho behavior, overly competitive, never admits he/she is wrong.
  • Accepts violence as an appropriate way to solve problems.
  • Unpredictable mood swings.
  • Explosive anger.
  • Isolates you from friends and family or anyone of the opposite sex.
  • Cannot express feelings and emotions without violence or abuse.
  • Believes in rigid sex roles.
  • Blames others for his/her problems.
  • Cruel to animals.
  • Treats partner as property.
  • Abused former partners.
  • Threatens violence.
  • Is obsessed with weapons.

Similar to the Power and Control, and the Equality Wheels, there is a Teen Power and Control Wheel to assist in identifying Violent and Non-Violent relationships.

If you or someone you know is in an abusive relationship, tell someone you trust. If you are concerned about your safety, a parent, trusted adult, school counselor or other teacher may be available to listen and help.

Remember it is not your fault. If you need someone to talk to or referral to any services, please call your local domestic violence program.
