AmeriCorps
“one year to make a difference,
one chance to make your mark, one experience that will change
your life”
The North Dakota Council on Abused Women’s Services and
AmeriCorps are currently in their first year of collaboration.
Eight domestic violence agencies have chosen to participate
and have taken on the challenges of community education,
volunteer recruitment and retention along with scores of
other projects.
What is AmeriCorps?
AmeriCorps, the domestic Peace Corps, engages more than
50,000 Americans a year in intensive, results-driven community
service. Members are challenged to serve those in their
communities who are often forgotten or overlooked by other
programs. They search out voids and fill them. NDCAWS has
8 members who will serve 900 hours over a term of 9 to 12
months. They will receive a small living stipend for their
service and upon completion of their term will receive an
education award that can be applied to qualified existing
or future student loans, current educational expenses at
qualified schools or to pay expenses while participating
in an approved school-to-work program. For more information

Where is AmeriCorps?
8 agencies across the state have chosen to be part of
AmeriCorps. Ft. Berthold, Bismarck, Minot, Beulah, Jamestown,
Fargo, Grand Forks and Grafton all have AmeriCorps members
working part time performing a variety of tasks. Members
are recruiting volunteers, organizing community outreach,
educating students and community members and groups, tracking
court data, developing and maintaining information and tracking
systems, providing advocacy services, performing research
and much more. They are above all making a difference in
the lives of those they touch.
Is AmeriCorps right for me?
If you want to…..
- Gain valuable training and experience in advocacy training,
systems intervention, crisis intervention, listening skills,
legal issues, and community referrals
- Become a vital member of a domestic violence program
- Participate in staff meetings, community task forces,
board meetings, educational presentations, and fundraising
activities
- Learn about the role of individuals, volunteer groups
and special interest groups in bringing about social change
….then AmeriCorps is EXACTLY right for you.
Members must be at least 17 years old and have a high
school diploma. There is no upper age limit. They are paid
$4,200 (before taxes) per year and receive $2,362.50 in
the form of an education voucher upon completion. They receive
numerous trainings on different aspects of public education,
community collaboration, teamwork training, and volunteer
recruitment, along with other AmeriCorps mandated training.
Members are directly supervised by staff from the agency
with which they are hired.
