Other Helping Professionals

   

Action Steps:

1. Provide education on domestic violence and sexual assault for other helping professionals (social workers, counselors, nurses, parole and probation officers, therapists, etc.)

a. Infuse curricula on domestic violence and sexual assault into college curricula.

Mechanism for Implementation: WEAV college curriculum infusion

Agency Responsible: CAWS/CASAND, CVP/WEAV, ND Board of Higher Education

b. Partner with local crisis intervention programs and state coalition to provide in-service/training for seasoned professionals on victims’ issues and resource/referral material for their communities.

Mechanism for Implementation: Partnership with certification boards to create and include questions pertaining to intimate partner violence in certification and re-certification process.

Agency Responsible: CAWS/CASAND, Certification Boards and associations of helping profession. 

2. Educate employers on the signs and symptoms of domestic violence and sexual assault by encouraging them to:

a. Recognize warning signs that victims of domestic violence and sexual assault may exhibit.

Mechanism for Implementation: In-service and cross trainings

Agency Responsible: CAWS/CASAND, Domestic Violence Programs, Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

b. Have knowledge of services and refer victims to crisis intervention agencies

Mechanism for Implementation: ND State Plan Resource Directory, Task Force Inclusion, and Poster with information for victims in employee lounges

Agency Responsible: CAWS/CASAND, Local Community Programs and Employers

c. Provide educational materials and referral information in new employee packets and make the information available in break rooms for current employees.

Mechanism for Implementation: Mailings of sample packets to employers

Agency Responsible: CAWS/CASAND, Local Programs, EAP, and Equal Opportunity Employers

3. Provide education on domestic violence and sexual assault to law enforcement officers.

a. Research and develop law enforcement promoted public education/awareness campaign on domestic violence and sexual assault

Mechanism for Implementation: Local Law Enforcement Agencies

Agency Responsible: CAWS/CASAND, Law Enforcement Agencies, and Law Enforcement Training Centers

b. Provide updated training for police, state’s attorneys, and judges to increase collaboration on domestic violence and sexual assault cases.

Mechanism for Implementation: Formalized community task force and response teams statewide.  These task forces will enhance and provide training in uniform protocol, cross training for advocates and law enforcement to facilitate communication and collaboration in cases involving intimate partner violence.

Agency Responsible: CAWS/CASAND, Law Enforcement Agencies, and Law Enforcement Training Centers, State Bar Association, Court System

c. Provide updated training for police on sexual assault investigations and evidence collection to ensure the appropriate and accurate response by law enforcement.

Mechanism for Implementation: Cross training on uniform and statewide protocol for sexual assault evidence collection for current and new officers

Agency Responsible: State Crime Lab, CAWS/CASAND, Law Enforcement Training Centers, and Statewide Law Enforcement Agencies

d. Promote law enforcement inclusion of advocates (where available) in all domestic violence and sexual assault investigations.

Mechanism for Implementation: Formalized community task force and response teams statewide.  These task forces will enhance and provide training in uniform protocol, cross training for advocates and law enforcement.

Agency Responsible: CAWS/CASAND, Law Enforcement Agencies, and Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Programs

e. Research, develop and facilitate trainings to Fire Departments, EMT’s, and First Responders regarding cases involving domestic violence and sexual assault.

Mechanism for Implementation: Cross trainings through Train-the Trainer models, and community task forces.

Agency Responsible: CAWS/CASAND, Associations of Fire Fighters, EMS Workers, and other First Responders

4. Provide education/training to providers on appropriate screening for domestic and sexual violence and provide resource and referral information for women receiving services in the following programs:

a. WIC (Women, Infants and Children nutrition program)

b. TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families)

c. Family Planning/Public Health Agencies

Mechanism for Implementation: Cross training and community task forces

Agency Responsible: Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Programs, WIC, Family Planning/Public Health Providers statewide
