Teachers/Educators and Daycare Providers

   

Action Steps:

1. Teacher Education

a. Research and develop approved educational curriculum and create course requirements for potential teachers at higher education level.

Mechanism for Implementation: Collaborative partnerships with DV programs and schools using the “13 Strategies to Strengthen Relationships” protocol. (See Appendix D)

Agency Responsible: CAWS/CASAND, ND School Board Association, ND Board of Higher Education, Domestic and Sexual Violence Programs

b. Provide in-service opportunities for teachers on domestic violence and sexual assault issues and provide resource and referral information on local programs and the State Coalition at minimum at the following conferences:

    Annual NDEA Conference

    In-service days

    Annual Roughrider Conference

Mechanism for Implementation: Video and educational material promotion and dissemination; CAWS Clearinghouse and Speakers Bureau

Agency Responsible: CAWS/CASAND

c. Research, develop and advocate for policy change in the following ways:

    Educate legislators on how domestic violence and sexual assault affects schools in ND, especially regarding prevalence in ND communities, current statutes and needs for the future.

    Educate school boards on domestic violence and sexual assault prevalence in their local community and provide resources to assist in the revision of policies and curriculum relating to violence.

Mechanism for Implementation: Cross training opportunities, educational campaign, task force development and inclusion

Agency Responsible: CAWS/CASAND, CAWS Publicity Committee, Local Community Task Forces, Local Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault programs

d. Infuse sexual and domestic violence prevention and awareness into whole school-healthy school environment

Mechanism for Implementation: Use “13 Strategies to Build Relationships” among schools and agencies statewide, inclusion in task forces

Agency Responsible: DPI, CAWS/CASAND, Local Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault programs

2. Educate daycare providers

a. Partner with appropriate agencies to provide CEU’s annually     

Mechanism for Implementation: Cross trainings

Agency Responsible: Dept. of Human Services, CAWS/CASAND

b. Organize in-service training for daycare providers to educate them on domestic violence and sexual assault and to provide relevant resources and referral materials.     

Mechanism for Implementation: In-service training opportunities at time of licensure or re-certification

Agency Responsible: CAWS/CASAND, Dept. of Human Services

c. Partner with local domestic violence programs and the coalition to research and develop mass mailings to daycare providers to provide ongoing education and resource materials.

Mechanism for Implementation: Include day care providers on mailing list for existing newsletters promoting non-violence (Cassandra, Middle School Newsletter); distribute daycare brochure Developed under Rural Grant
