Subgroup O: Department of Public Instruction (DPI) Staff

   

Action Steps:

1. Increase collaborative efforts and partnerships with DPI, local schools and crisis intervention programs to identify and respond to victims of violence (child abuse, sexual abuse and child witnesses to domestic violence) in the schools.

Mechanism for Implementation: Local task forces, including school boards and teachers

Agency Responsible: CAWS/CASAND Child Advocacy Committee, Prevent Child Abuse ND, Local Domestic and Sexual Violence Programs, DPI

2. Encourage teacher education courses on domestic violence, dating violence, and sexual assault issues to assist teachers in identifying the signs and symptoms of abuse and making referrals for victims.

Mechanism for Implementation: WEAV curriculum development & infusion

Agency Responsible: DPI, ND Board of Higher of Education, WEAV, CAWS/CASAND, College Campuses, and Teachers

3. Provide statewide teacher in-services to provide on-going education and referral information on domestic violence and sexual assault as well as links to local crisis intervention programs and the state coalition.

Mechanism for Implementation: Rough-Rider Conference, Teacher Learning Centers, NDEA Conference, and Local School Boards/Associations

Agency Responsible: DPI, CAWS/CASAND, ND School Board Association, and local school boards

4. Develop opportunities for community support of prevention programs in the schools through collaborative efforts among parents and professionals to change social norms and attitudes toward violence.

Mechanism for Implementation: Marketing prevention programs through community and student interest groups, Middle School Violence Project

Agency Responsible: Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault programs, local schools, School Board Association, DPI, Parent Teacher Association (PTA), Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), Future Consumer and Career Leaders in America (FCCLA), NDCAWS/CASAND
